Programs are held on the 2nd Thursday at 7:15 PM in the Lilly Nature Center in West Lafayette. People are invited to come beforehand for “Dinner and Conversation” at 6:00 PM at the MCL Cafeteria (West Lafayette) .
Please also remember that Barny’s popular Early Bird Hikes begin again at Celery Bog Thursday, March 27th.
Meet at the gravel parking area at 8 a.m. for an hour (or so) of birding before work, classes, or other activities. The walks are held every Thursday morning through the spring migration season.
April 4-6 (Fri-Sun) – Bake & Plant Sale West Lafayette Public Library. Donations and cashiers needed. See p. 2 for details. Contact Susan Ulrich (see page 7) to help or if you have any questions. 6:30-9 p.m. Fri, 10-5 Sat, 1-5 Sun.
Thursday, April 10 – Program: Birding Puerto Rico. Rick Read, SAS board member. Rick and Debbie went to Puerto Rico on a 6-day bird trip arranged by the Indiana Audubon Society. The focus of the trip was to see the 17 endemic bird species of Puerto Rico plus other regional specialties. In all 114 species of birds were seen. Rick will tell about the trip and show his many photos which include 12 of the endemics. 7:15 p.m. Lilly Nature Center, Celery Bog Park, West Lafayette. Free parking and refreshments.
Saturday, April 12 – Birds & Flowers Walk Susan Ulrich, leader. Half day trip. Meet at the first parking area in Ross Hills Park in Western Tippecanoe County at 8 a.m. We will look for early wildflowers and birds and also see some of the areas that have been cleared of honeysuckle.
Tuesday, April 22 – Earth Day Special Afternoon. A hands-on celebration of Earth Day. Meet at the first parking area at Ross Hills Park for this big mustard-honeysuckle work day organized by NICHES, Purdue, INPAWS, and SAS. Hours are 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Saturday, April 26 – Garden Expo Plant Sale. Put on by the Tippecanoe County Master Gardeners. SAS is looking for donations of plants and items to sell. See p.2. Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds off Teal Road, Lafayette, 9:30-3 p.m.
Saturday, May 3 – May Count Review Trip Barny Dunning, leader. Bird identification a bit rusty? Join leader Barny Dunning and others to brush up on your birding skills before the May 10th Big Day Count. Learn or relearn songs, and I.D. clues. 8 a.m. Martell Forest main entrance on east side of Tippecanoe County road 725W.
Thursday, May 8 – Program: Computers & Chickadees. Dr. Pat Zollner, Ass. Professor of Quantitative Ecology, Purdue. Computer models and simulations can help form wildlife management and conservation policy decisions. A specific case study from Fort Harrison State Park near Indianapolis will highlight this strategy. 7:15 p.m. Lilly Nature Center, Celery Bog Park, West Lafayette. Free parking and refreshments.
Saturday, May 10 – Big Day in May Count. An exciting all–day bird count using county boundaries. Any help is appreciated—trying to find all the species in a county is a big job. More on page 1. A compilation party for the Tippecanoe Participants or interested individuals will be at 8 p.m. at Joe & Temple Pearson’s’ house, 700 Ross St, WL.
Saturday, May 17 – Mind BOGgling Event Wetlands Celebration. Don’t miss this exciting and informative event for families and individuals at Celery Bog Park in West Lafayette. Lots of activities for kids, plus music, nature walks, talks and stage presentations, live animals, and the Emergency Muncie Truck, too. Hours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. See p 2.
Saturday, June 14 – Birds of Prophetstown. 7:30 a.m. SAS is leading this tour for our members as well as members of the Indiana Audubon Society. Our local state park has a lot of great habitat, especially for grassland birds which are in decline nationally. There are also wetland, brush, and woodland birds. Come out not only to see the birds but also to meet other birders from around the state. A state park pass or an entry fee may be needed or you can carpool from Celery Bog Park at 7:00.
